A new Met Office weather warning for snow and ice has been issued today as Merseyside is hit with a double alert. The region already falls under a yellow ice warning but a further warning for snow and ice is in place from 3am tomorrow (Thursday) until 12pm.

The frosty and cold start to the year has hit most of the country and it’s set to continue as temperatures drop further. An ice alert is currently in place for most of the North West, this will end at 12pm but it has created plenty of disruption. Railway services have been impacted and some schools have made the decision to close as a result of the conditions.

The new weather alert is a yellow warning for snow and ice. The Met Office has warned that some roads and railways are likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services. There may be some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths and some injuries from slips and falls on icy are a possibility.

A map published by the Met Office shows how much of the region is covered by the warning. The yellow shading covers all of Merseyside and further afield. Both Liverpool and Wirral fall under the warning which will be in place for nine hours. You can see the map below.

Looking ahead to the icy and snowy conditions expected tomorrow, the Met Office said: “Showers, mostly of rain and sleet at low levels and near coasts, but of snow inland and over higher ground, are expected to affect the area later Wednesday night and on Thursday morning.

“With many surfaces below freezing, this will lead to some icy stretches on untreated surfaces, while a few cm of fresh snow could affect some areas, mainly places above about 100 metres.”

The weather agency also advise to be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly. When a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.
