The cause of death for former One Direction star Liam Payne has been confirmed as “polytrauma” during a UK inquest. Buckinghamshire Coroner’s Court, which held a hearing on December 17, stated that it may take a while to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the 31 year old’s fatal fall from a balcony in Argentina in October 2024.
Five individuals have been charged in connection with Payne’s death, which occurred at the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The UK inquest into his death has been postponed until a pre-inquest review on November 6, according to the coroner’s court.
Dr Roberto Victor Cohen confirmed Payne’s medical cause of death as “polytrauma”, indicating multiple traumatic injuries. Payne, who was identified as a “singer and entertainer” during the hearing, was formally identified with the help of funeral directors in Buckinghamshire.
Senior Coroner Crispin Butler noted during the hearing: “Whilst there are ongoing investigations in Argentina into the circumstances of Liam’s death, over which I have no legal jurisdiction, it is anticipated that procuring the relevant information to address particularly how Liam came by his death may take some time through the formal channel of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.”
Cheryl Tweedy, Payne’s former partner and mother of his son Bear, along with fellow One Direction stars Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson, were among those who attended Payne’s funeral in Buckinghamshire in November. His family and friends also paid their respects, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Following the hiatus of his band, he embarked on a successful solo career, releasing his debut solo album LP1 in December 2019. The album featured hits such as Polaroid and Strip That Down featuring Quavo, as well as the track For You with Rita Ora.
