Major A38 delays and miles of traffic after heavy snow in Devon

Drivers in Devon are facing long delays on the A38 due to heavy snow this afternoon, Wednesday, January 8. The snowfall is affecting the area around Exeter, with some cars being abandoned on the side of the road.

National Highways has warned drivers of 90-minute delays and seven miles of congestion. The worst affected area is currently between Kennford and Chudleigh and crews are at the scene ploughing and gritting the road.

It said: “There is heavy snow fall on the #A38 in #Devon between the #A380 #Kenford and the #B3344 #Chudleigh. We are continuing to grit and plough.

“Delays are now approaching 90 minutes with 7 miles of congestion back onto the #M5. Please allow extra journey time and drive carefully.”

Roads and traffic monitoring site, Inrix, reported severe delays on the A38 near Kennford. It said: “Severe delays due to snow and fog on A38 Expressway in both directions around Racecourse Junction. Congestion to Chudleigh and before Okehampton turning, solid along the A379 towards Starcross as traffic heads away. A clear up is underway.”

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for parts of Devon and the region. The updated warning, in place until 9pm warns of major travel disruption.

Forecasters have warned: “Sleet and snow is expected to continue this afternoon and evening with accumulations of 2-5 cm on high ground above 150 m, and up to 10 cm above about 250m, leading to some travel disruption. The sleet and snow will ease from the west during the first part of Wednesday night.”
