Newport secondary school locked down as teacher 'hospitalised in assault by former student'

A secondary school was forced into lockdown after an alleged attack by a former pupil that left teachers injured.

Emergency services were called to Newport High School on Tuesday after three teachers were allegedly assaulted and school property and cars reportedly damaged. Two of the teachers received minor injuries, while a third went to hospital as a precaution following the attack which was witnessed by pupils and other members of staff and was said to be “extremely distressing”.

The former pupil is believed to be aged between 11 and 14 years old. Newport High School said it initiated its “emergency procedures”, with the school locked down while the incident was dealt with. In a post on Facebook, the school said staff “instigated its emergency procedures to ensure the safety of pupils”.

It added: “This included a lockdown procedure towards the end of the school day. Police attended and supported the school. Due to the ongoing investigation, we cannot comment further on the details on the incident, but it was extremely upsetting for both staff and pupils, particularly those who witnessed the incident.

“We are aware of a rumour that a knife was involved but at this stage we have no evidence that was the case and can confirm that no weapons were used. We take school safety very seriously and, have a range of measures in place, but a review is being carried out to see if any further precautions could be taken.”

Gwent Police said two of the teachers received minor injuries, while the third had to be taken to hospital as a precaution, reported WalesOnline. A spokesperson said: “We received a report that an ex-pupil of Newport High School attended the school yesterday (Tuesday 7 January) and reportedly caused damage to school property, cars and assaulted three teachers. Two teachers received minor injuries and the third attended hospital as a precaution. Enquiries are ongoing.”
