A new yellow weather warning for ice has been issued covering Cardiff and south east Wales. The Met Office issued the warning at around 8pm on Wednesday evening.
It will last from 12.15am on Thursday until 10.30am, during which time temperatures in Wales are expected to drop to -6C in parts of Powys. In south Wales and south east Wales, where temperatures are expected to be between -1C and possibly -4C in the early morning on Thursday, many cold and wet surfaces are expected to freeze over night following a period of rain and possible snow.
The forecast reads: “Following rain and snow many cold wet surfaces are likely to freeze later tonight, producing icy conditions in places. Icy stretches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths are likely to increase the chance of accidents and injuries.”
The warning, which also covers much of the south of England and the south west of England, will affect Cardiff, Caerphilly, Newport, Monmouthshire, Torfaen, and parts of Rhondda Cynon Taf and the Vale of Glamorgan. The map below from the Met Office gives a clear picture.

A separate yellow warning for snow and ice is in place for Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Gwynedd, Anglesey, Pembrokeshire, Powys, Swansea and Wrexham. Weather maps show where in Wales it is expected to be the coldest. From the below forecast for 6am on Thursday, you can see it’s expected to get as low as -6C in Builth Wells in Powys which will be the coldest of anywhere in the country, according to the Met Office.

West of Llandovery is predicted to reach -5C, while Newtown is also expected to see temperatures at around -4C. Even the warmest spot forecasted in Wales on Thursday morning at west Pembrokeshire is expected to only reach three degrees above freezing.
Temperatures will steadily rise through the day on Thursday but it’ll feel very cold throughout the day with temperatures only getting slightly above freezing during the day. By 7pm on Thursday the maps show most places in Wales will return to freezing temperatures or under.
