Firefighters are tackling a large scrapyard fire in the Black Country with residents warned to keep windows and doors closed. West Midlands Fire Service was alerted to an incident first reported as being in Bassett Road in Cradley shortly after 6pm on Monday (December 30).
Some eight fire crews with more than 30 firefighters on board along with a hydraulic platform and a drone team were sent to the scene, now reported as being in Hayes Lane. The fire is said to have affected two single storey buildings and several vehicles at the scrapyard.
Crews are using several main jets and hose reels to tackle the blaze. The industrial estate is being evacuated, but there are no reports of any injuries. People are being asked to avoid the area and jeep doors and windows closed.

In a post online a spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said: “Just after 6pm on Monday 30 December, we responded to an incident on Hayes Lane, Cradley, Halesowen. Crews and fire appliances from Northfield, Woodgate Valley, Tipton, Bournbrook, Dudley, Brierley Hill, Smethwick, Stourbridge, and Haden Cross fire stations are in attendance, as well as one of our hydraulic platforms.
“Our drone team have also been mobilised to assist with firefighting operations from above. This incident is a fire affecting two single-storey out buildings and several vehicles within a scrapyard.
Crews are working from both sides of the area to extinguish the fire. Several main jets and hose reels are in use. We are asking local people to stay clear of the area, and to keep doors and windows closed. There are no casualties, however an evacuation of the industrial estate is being arranged.”
