Manchester Airport has closed its runways after a dumping of heavy snow. Rather unexpected snowfall landed on much of Greater Manchester this morning (January 9).
While a Met Office weather warning for snow and ice covered Wigan, the rest of Greater Manchester was not issued a warning. Snow and ice has led to havoc on many of the regions road, while several schools have closed today.
Now, Manchester Airport has closed its runways due to the weather. It’s the latest temporary closure for the airport in a week of major disruption as the cold snap takes place.
A spokesperson for Manchester Airport said: “Our runways are temporarily closed due to significant levels of snow, as our teams work hard to clear them as quickly as possible. The safety of our passengers is our top priority, and we appreciate your patience during this time.
“Please check with your airline for the latest flight information and allow extra travel time today. We will update you as soon as possible. Thank you.”
Temperatures are forecast to lurk below zero until late morning. Sunny intervals are expected by lunchtime, before a clear and cold night, according to the Met Office.
