Flights at Manchester Airport have been cancelled following heavy snow. The airport previously closed its runways today, Thursday, January 9 to clear the snow.
However, the runways have since opened but as a result of the earlier closure there are delays and cancellations to some flights. In a statement on its social media pages, the airport said: “Our runways are now open but, as a result of the earlier closure, some departures and arrivals may still experience delays.
“Please check with your airline for the latest flight information and allow extra time for your journey today. We would like to thank our teams for their hard work in getting the runway operational again.
“The safety of our passengers remains our top priority. Thank you for your understanding and patience.” Today is the sixth day in a row Merseyside has been hit with a weather warning.
The yellow weather warning for snow and ice comes after days of traffic chaos, school closures and rail cancellations as a result of the disruptive weather. The latest warning for today began at 12.15am and is in place until 11am.
Merseyrail activated its cold weather plan this morning, meaning the first trains of the day ran without customers. The train operator said this was to “ensure lines are clear and safe for use.”
The Met Office said: “Showers, mostly of rain and sleet at low levels and near coasts, but of snow inland and over higher ground, are expected to affect the area later Wednesday night and on Thursday morning.
“With many surfaces below freezing, this will lead to some icy stretches on untreated surfaces, while a few cm of fresh snow could affect some areas, mainly places above about 100 metres.” These are the latest flights cancelled at Manchester Airport:
