‘I’m a nutritionist and these three foods are essential for fighting disease’

Zoe nutritionist Dr Federica Amati has revealed that there are three simple ingredients everybody should be adding to their diets this year that will help them fight disease.

Aside from pointing out the importance of having a good amount of vegetables in our diet, Dr Amati was keen to note how we should be looking to add the right ‘complex carbohydrates’ to our plates this year.

She said: “Make sure you’re having some really good quality complex carbohydrates, now, this is where a lot of people get confused about what that is. Sweet potatoes are wonderful, but really we want whole grains (like) quinoa, buckwheat, barley.”

Explaining how the three ingredients have been somewhat forgotten about recently, Dr Federica continued: “So, these wholegrains, when you look at the data to assign ‘what is the dietary habit that is causing most disease across the world?”

Much to the surprise of the hosts of the Self Care Club podcast, Dr Federica explained how it is a diet low in wholegrains that can potentially be a major risk factor in developing disease, according to studies.

“Good question, people have done this research, and you’d think it’s going to be a diet high in red meat and that features down the bottom of the list, but at the top of the list is a diet low in wholegrains.” she added.

Dr Federica also provided some crucial advice when it comes to how we think about the food that we eat, and how there is possibly a need for a shift in focus: “So one of the key things that we have to think about when we think ‘how can I make a healthy eating habit in the new year’. Change your mentality from what you need to be eating less of to what you need to be eating more of.”

Packed with nutrients, one of the diseases that wholegrains are most well-known for fighting against is heart disease, and according to Healthline a review of 10 studies found that consuming just 28 grams of wholegrains a day could decrease your risk of heart disease by a whopping 22 per cent.

The health website also noted the importance of opting for wholegrains instead of refined grains as they provide a greater health boost according to research.
