A man who died after an alleged stabbing on New Year’s Day has been named for the first time. The 38-year-old died following an incident on Essex Street, in Rochdale, in the early hours of Wednesday, January 1.
The victim has now been named as Alberto Ursu. He was named in official court documents after a 30-year-old man appeared before magistrates today (January 9), accused of murdering Mr Ursu.
Hassan Suliman, of Rothesay Terrace, has been charged with murder, Section 47 assault, Section 39 assault, possession of an offensive weapon and possession of a bladed article. Suliman appeared at Wigan Magistrates Court earlier today.
He has been remanded in custody ahead of his next court appearance at Manchester Crown Court. The case has been listed for 10.30am tomorrow (Friday).
Emergency services were called out to Essex Street at around 2.40am on New Year’s Day. According to Greater Manchester Police, Mr Ursu was found with a severe knife wound.

The investigation remains ongoing and GMP is urging anyone with information to come forward. Detective Inspector Paul Davies, from GMP’s Major Incident Team, said: “I would like to once again pay tribute to the victim. It is another tragic incident that has seen a member of the community in Rochdale, needlessly lose their life.
“We have been, and will continue to support his family at this difficult time. We are still appealing to anyone with any information to continue to call us on 101 quoting incident 715 of January 1, 2025.
“That includes footage from video doorbells, dashcams, CCTV or mobile phones that could have captured the incident or the moments before or after it. If you would prefer to remain anonymous, please call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
