Toddler, 1, in pushchair hit by car update after granddad died in horror crash

A little boy who was in his pushchair when he was hit by a car in a horror crash that killed his grandad, is still heavily sedated in hospital.

Michael Keen was rushed to hospital after the crash in Barnsley on Sunday, December 22 and was critically ill. His grandmother has now spoken out to say the tot is “making good progress, he is still heavily sedated but starting to become more aware of his surroundings”.

He has already had multiple operations and was put into an induced coma, to aid his recovery. His gran Elizabeth set up a fundraising page for him “to raise funds to help Michael when he leaves hospital with any future needs”. She added that “anything remaining will be saved for him to access when he reaches 18”.

Police were called to reports of a crash involving a blue Volkswagen Polo and confirmed that a 56-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, later confirmed to be Michael’s grandad. The car had swerved off the road and ploughed into a wall in the Worsbrough area of Barnsley before officers were called just after 11.40am.

South Yorkshire Police said the driver of the Volkswagen stopped at the scene and is assisting officers with their enquiries. Members of the public are also being urged to come forward if they were in the area, or might have any CCTV or dashcam footage that happened to pick up the crash.

A force spokeswoman said: “We’re appealing for information and witnesses after the death of a man and the critical injury of a toddler following a road traffic collision in Barnsley. At 11.41am yesterday (Sunday 22 December) officers were called to West Street in the Worsbrough area of Barnsley to reports of a collision involving a car and two pedestrians.

“A blue Volkswagen Polo was involved in a collision with a wall and a 56-year-old man and a 1-year-old boy. The man sadly died at the scene and the boy was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. He remains in hospital at this time in a critical condition. The family of the man have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

“The driver of the Volkswagen stopped at the scene and is assisting officers with their enquiries. We’re appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident with information, CCTV or dashcam footage to get in touch.
