Russell Howard’s health fears over ‘awful’ family ordeal as he quits TV after 19 years

Russell Howard has confessed that he is attempting to “cheat” the ageing process due to his fear of death. The 44 year old comedian believes his fear of dying was “inherited” from his father, whose mother passed away at a young age.

Following this tragic event, he said: “Now my dad’s really into fitness. I think I’ve inherited his mania with death.”

“I hate the idea of withering. I’ve seen relatives wither, and it was awful. If I could make it to 90 and be myself until 89 that would be enough for me.

“I just love the idea of cheating that ageing process,” he told The Independent. The comedian also mentioned that becoming a father for the first time at 44 has made him even more “terrified”.

He welcomed his first child in May with his doctor wife, Cerys Morgan. In an effort to live as long as possible, Russell revealed that he has turned to biohacking, a broad term that includes a variety of DIY activities and practices aimed at enhancing physical, mental, and emotional performance or well-being, reports Bristol Live.

This often involves a mix of biology, self-experimentation, technology, and lifestyle changes. One of Russell’s lifestyle changes includes taking more cold showers, which are believed to offer numerous health benefits such as improving metabolism and enhancing circulation.

Furthermore, Russell admits he has “a desperately strange relationship with food” and only eats two meals a day.

The comedian has candidly shared that he’s taken a step back from television after an impressive 19-year run, choosing instead to focus on his stand-up career and podcast ventures. His last TV appearance was in August on Channel 4’s ‘Big Fat Quiz of Telly’.

During his conversation on the ‘Have A Word’ podcast, he expressed his preference for stand-up comedy: “I had a pretty good run, I just prefer doing stand-up. I was all over the world and it was just fun.”

He further emphasised his passion for live performance, stating, “there’s nothing else I’d rather do” than craft a new set and go on tour. “TV is fun but it’s not as fun. Writing a book, I couldn’t do because I don’t want to sit and entertain myself, but doing stand-up is what I love doing,” he concluded.
