‘The backlash was quite catastrophic’ – Charlton boss ready for Crawley Town return fixture

Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones is intent on putting the record straight against Crawley Town on New Year’s Day.

The Addicks head to West Sussex on the back of three straight League One wins which have lifted them to ninth in the table.

Charlton are unbeaten in their last five matches in the league since they lost 2-1 to Crawley Town, bossed by former Addicks goalkeeper Rob Elliot, at The Valley at the start of December.

Jones and his players were both booed off the pitch at half-time and full-time following that defeat which left them in the lower half of the table.

But since then Charlton have pulled off a strong points return which has boosted their prospects of a top-six finish that had been set as a minimum objective before a ball was kicked in August.

“The backlash from the Crawley defeat was quite catastrophic,” said Jones, speaking after Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Wycombe Wanderers. “It was unbelievable. So we would like to put that right.”

Chuks Aneke has been sidelined with a groin problem. The former Arsenal and MK striker was at the Wycombe match but was not part of Jones’s matchday squad.

Matty Godden, Danny Hylton and Gassan Ahadme were frontline bench options at the weekend with only the latter coming on to replace two-goal Miles Leaburn in the closing stages.

“It is too early for Chuks,” said Jones. “Chuks has trained sporadically and trained fully yesterday (Saturday).”
