Greater Manchester has been plunged into sub-zero temperatures as a bitter cold snap continues. Residents are waking up to temperatures of around -3C this morning (January 10) following another icy night across the region.
A number of schools have been closed this week, with some keeping their doors closed today including Urmston Grammar School and several primary schools. A UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) cold health alert for the North West has been extended to midday on Tuesday, January 14.
It means health services are likely to be stretched as the weather causes increased illnesses and possible deaths in the days to come. People are being urged to take care on icy pavements and road.
A yellow weather warning for ice is in force across western areas of Greater Manchester – including Wigan, and parts of Trafford and Salford. It is in force until 10am today, following heavy snowfall in parts of Greater Manchester on Thursday morning.
The A555 Manchester Airport relief road remains closed. Stockport Council says the road will be inspected today ahead of a potential reopening. Other roads remain affected by the weather – with the A57 Snake Pass described as ‘just passable’ and flooding reported on the M56 westbound near Runcorn, in Cheshire.
