Two-second rule many drivers don’t know but comes with £100 fine

UK motorists are being reminded to adhere to the crucial ‘two-second rule’ while driving, or they could face a £100 fine. National Highways, which oversees motorways and major A roads across the UK, has highlighted tailgating as the “single biggest issue that drivers find irritating or intimidating”.

Some drivers may tailgate unintentionally, while others might do so in response to being cut-off or other road rage incidents. However, the rule is clear; drivers must maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead to minimise the risk of accidents.

The Highway Code recommends a two-second gap between vehicles on fast roads, allowing for reaction and stopping time. To implement this rule, drivers can choose a fixed point ahead and recite: “Only a fool breaks the two-second rule.”

If you reach the object before finishing the phrase, you’re too close. In adverse weather conditions or when following larger vehicles, the gap should be increased.

Tailgating is illegal and can result in fines and penalties. Rule 126 of the Highway Code states that dangerous driving, including tailgating, is policed, and offenders can face a £100 fine and three penalty points.
