Photos charting University of Birmingham history as it celebrates 125 years

In 2025 the University of Birmingham is celebrating 125 years. The university received its Royal Charter in March 1900 from Queen Victoria – and hundreds of thousands of students have benefited since.

The Cadbury Research Library at the University of Birmingham is releasing previously unseen or less well-known images from the University’s archives. These include events on campus, the development of the campus, education and learning and some of the academics and research.

We have selected a few highlights from this exhibition which will be on display at the University of Birmingham Library and accessible via an online Flickr account.

Wonderful pictures show the official opening of the University by King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra in 1909 and also the work carried out from 1918-19 with maxillofacial surgery to soldiers returning from the trenches of the First World War.

The construction of the Joseph Chamberlain Memorial Clock Tower, affectionately known as ‘Old Joe’, is surrounded in scaffolding during its building. Queen Elizabeth II has also made a few visits along with Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin who made a visit in 1927.
