UK chain opens at once troubled shopping centre

A UK chain is the latest brand to open at a shopping centre that is bouncing back from its pandemic woes. The Menai Centre was developed in 2007 by Cathco Property Group but was left 80% vacant in recent years after losing big names like Debenhams and H&M.

It was bought by Bearmont Capital in April 2023. There have been a number of new tenants added and Cyngor Gwynedd’s Cabinet Members have also backed plans to develop a new Health and Wellbeing Centre at the former Debenhams unit.

Now Greggs has opened a new shop in the centre – taking on Unit 9. They have created 12 new jobs after relocating from the high street.

Rob Lloyd, CEO of Bearmont Capital, said: “We are pleased to announce Greggs’ tenancy at Unit 9, a milestone that underscores our commitment to restoring vibrancy to Bangor High Street. This particular unit has never been occupied since the centre’s opening 18 years ago and is ideally suited for Greggs due to its prime location opposite a busy bus stop, ensuring high footfall and visibility.”

Shop Manager, Nina Gizza, said: “We can’t wait to welcome both Greggs fans and new customers to our brand-new shop. We’ve got an amazing range of iconic savouries, Fairtrade hot drinks, hot food and healthier choices available for takeaway, sit-in or Click + Collect.”

Gillian Long, Retail Operations Director for Greggs, said: “Our new shop in Bangor has brought 12 new jobs to the local area, as well as providing customers with a modern, convenient new place to experience their Greggs favourites.”
