A boiler guru from New Boiler Installation Glasgow has emphasised the importance of mastering the art of heating your home during the harsh winter period to keep it snug without incurring extortionate energy bills or ending up with icy pipes. They strongly advise against turning the heat up high during cold snaps, suggesting a steady temperature is more effective.
The expert highlighted that maintaining an “ideal temperature” ranging between 18C and 21C throughout the chillier months guarantees comfort and ensures the boiler runs efficiently. The specialist commented: “To avoid frozen pipes, you should set a minimum temperature on your boiler during winter.”

“Even when you’re not at home, it’s advisable to keep your thermostat at a minimum of 10C to prevent costly pipe-freezing issues.”
They also praised modern advancements like smart thermostats that grant meticulous management of heating systems, allowing residents to tailor heating programs to their personal routines.
When temperatures drop to freezing levels, the water inside the pipes can freeze and expand, which may result in cracks or even burst pipes. If this happens, the pipe releases the held water into the property, leading to significant water damage, reports the Express.
While persisting with a minimal thermostat setting is crucial, insulating any exposed pipes or those in unheated areas with insulation sleeves or foam pipe insulation – commonly called pipe lagging – could further shield against the cold.
If you’re jetting off for a winter getaway, it’s wise to switch off your mains stop tap and open the lowest sink or bath tap to alleviate the initial pressure on the pipework.
