UK households in certain Council Tax bands could potentially save up to £400 this year on energy bills. As the Cost of Living crisis persists, people can check online if they qualify for support through the Great British Insulation Scheme.
The scheme offers free or cheaper insulation to reduce your home’s energy bills. Eligibility is based on whether your home has an energy performance certificate (EPC) of D to G – you can check your EPC – or falls within Council Tax bands A-D in England or A-E in Scotland or Wales – you can verify your Council Tax band.
Homeowners, landlords or tenants (either renting privately or from a housing association) can apply. Tenants are advised to speak to their landlord before applying as their permission is required before any insulation can be installed, according to government guidelines.
Support may be available for installing a range of insulation types, including cavity wall insulation, solid wall insulation (internal or external), loft insulation, flat or pitched roof insulation, underfloor insulation, solid floor insulation, park home insulation or room-in-roof insulation. Before starting the application process online at GOV.
UK, you will need to provide details such as total household income, the type of benefits anyone living in the property receives – which may make you eligible for additional support – and your email address or phone number so your energy supplier can contact you if you’re eligible.
The government has stated that if you’re eligible for support, your energy supplier will contact you to arrange an assessment of the property. The new Labour Party government further adds that any costs involved will be communicated after the assessment.
You have the option not to proceed if you disagree with the assessment or the costs involved.
