Cleaning your toilet could be less of a chore with this hack.
Let’s face it – cleaning your toilet isn’t the most exciting task that needs doing around the house. However, our porcelain thrones are also one of the areas which need the most regular cleaning to stay hygienic.
You may have a set routine for cleaning your loo, but for some people, tackling the porcelain beast is tricky – especially if you’ve never been shown how to do it properly. If you’re struggling with where to start, worry not, as one cleaning expert on TikTok has gone viral by sharing beginner-friendly videos that will help you clean your entire house from top to bottom.
The expert, named Alyssa, recently shared a clip explaining how to properly clean a toilet, and even included one helpful tip on how to remove hard water stains from the toilet bowl which left even seasoned cleaners gobsmacked.
In her video, Alyssa started by listing all the supplies she uses when cleaning a toilet. She said you can wear gloves if you want to, and you will also need your favourite toilet bowl cleaner, paper towels, and a spray bottle of cleaner or disinfectant.
Alyssa began her cleaning routine by dry dusting the exterior of her toilet, including the top of the cistern, seat, hinges, and base. She emphasised missing this step would result in only “spraying dust” when applying disinfectant, making it tougher to clean later on.
Following the dusting, Alyssa sprayed the whole toilet with disinfectant, letting it settle while she worked a toilet bowl cleaner around the rim. Then, returning to the outside, she diligently wiped everything down with paper towels. The interior of the bowl was next, scrubbed with a brush, which she left under the seat to drip-dry. Afterwards, Alyssa sprays her brush with disinfectant to maintain its cleanliness.
What really sparked interest online were Alyssa’s pro tips for deep cleaning. For hard water stains or mineral deposits that regular cleaners can’t budge, she suggested an unlikely hero that’s common in skincare routines – a pumice stone.
She advised dampening the pumice stone before gently scrubbing at the stubborn areas; caution is key, as using a dry stone may be overly abrasive and risk scratching the porcelain.
Pumice stones are commonly used in skincare to exfoliate and remove tough skin, particularly on the feet. However, it’s essential to note you should purchase a new pumice stone for your toilet cleaning needs and keep it well away from the one designated for your skin.
Commenters on the informative video expressed their gratitude to Alyssa for sharing her cleaning wisdom. Several viewers mentioned they had never been taught how to clean properly and found this guidance extremely valuable, while even those knowledgeable about household chores admitted they learned something new.
One commented: “This is so needed, some people literally didn’t acquire such skills at home. Or acquired only some of them. I, for example, have never cleaned a microwave because we didn’t have one.” Another added: “This was actually very helpful! Specifically the dry dusting and not using bleach on a wood toilet because yes, it will ruin it!”
