Kim Cattrall spent much of her youth in Liverpool

‘Sex and the City’ star Kim Cattrall has always been proud of her Liverpool roots. Born in Mossley Hill in 1956, she was the daughter of secretary Gladys Shane and engineer Dennis Cattrall.
When Kim was only three-months-old, the family moved to British Columbia in Canada. However, she returned to Liverpool at age 11 when her nan fell ill, and lived in Wavertree, before moving back to North America to pursue a career in acting which has seen her star in ‘Sex and the City’ and its spin-off films.
In a 2013 interview with the ECHO, she discussed her upbringing in our city, saying: “There are many times I think about what my life would have been like if I would have stayed. In some ways I think I would have been much happier surrounded by family. In Canada it was just us.
When she returned to Merseyside as an 11-year-old, she lived with her great aunt Mai Bradbury in Wavertree and attended St Edmund’s College for Girls in the Princes Park area.
About that, Kim added: “When my dad came to collect me and take me back to Canada I remember, every night, praying to go back to Liverpool. He said my brothers and sisters missed me, I knew it was the right thing to do, but I was giving up so much. I loved St Edmund’s and didn’t want to leave my friends and family.”
Kim has always kept a keen eye on Liverpool since she left – sharing her excitement when the city was named the 2023 host of Eurovision and taking on then-Mayor Joe Anderson over plans for Sefton Park Meadows. She also has a link with our city’s most famous sons, which she has discussed in interviews.
The actress, 68, was asked about her upbringing when she appeared on ITV show ‘Piers Morgan’s Life Stories’ in 2017. Morgan said to her: “You’re a Scouser, you were born in Liverpool” and added: “Do you consider yourself a Liverpudlian?”
After sharing her Scouse accent, Kim said: “Proudly a Liverpudlian, yes. Always have been.” Morgan then continued: “Your aunt Jean used to babysit one of the most famous Liverpudlians of them all.”
Kim revealed: “One of the most famous drummers in the world – Ringo Starr. They were in the Dingle, that’s Toxteth. That’s where they lived and she was a young gal looking for babysitting money and that’s how that happened.”
Ringo was born in July 1940 at 9 Madryn Street in Dingle. The family then moved to Admiral Grove in Dingle when he was four, and he attended St Silas Primary and then Dingle Vale Secondary Modern.
He joined The Beatles in 1962, replacing Pete Best as drummer. Before that, Ringo had been in a number of Liverpool bands – most notably Rory Storm and the Hurricanes.
