Residents in 164 postcode areas across England are set to receive Cold Weather Payments due to the recent freezing temperatures.
The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) announced on Friday that an additional 48 areas will benefit from this bonus in addition to an original 116, designed to assist the most vulnerable in heating their homes during extreme cold spells. Many of these are in Yorkshire and the full list can be found below.
Cold Weather Payments provide qualifying households with £25 when temperatures drop below 0C for seven consecutive days. Those eligible for the cash include individuals on Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Universal Credit and Support for Mortgage Interest.
However, eligibility is restricted to residents of England, Wales or Northern Ireland as those in Scotland do not qualify for Cold Weather Payments. .
The payments are automatically deposited into bank accounts and typically appear within 14 days of each seven-day period of very cold weather. Since the start of the new year, Cold Weather Payments have been triggered in 164 areas, following a snowy and icy beginning to 2025.

In Sutherland, the northernmost region of the Highlands, overnight temperatures plummeted to minus 14.5C into Friday – marking the coldest night of the winter so far in the UK. It was the chilliest January overnight temperature since 2010.
The Met Office has indicated that Friday will mark “the start of a change to our weather” with milder temperatures “attempting to move in from the south west through the morning”.
Areas in Yorkshire, Wales, Derbyshire, Lancashire and Staffordshire are among those where payments have been triggered.
