Shock as police descend on quiet cul-de-sac after ‘gunshots’ fired in Cheetham Hill

On a cold Saturday morning, police officers continued making door-to-door enquiries on a quiet cul-de-sac in Cheetham Hill after reports of ‘gunshots’.

Officers from Greater Manchester Police were called to reports of a ‘firearms discharge’ on Ermington Drive at around 1pm on Friday, January 10.

Specialist officers were at the scene carrying out searches of the area, near to the border with Salford. This morning, Saturday, January 11, an operational support van remained at the scene as detectives spoke to residents about the incident.

Fortunately, no one has been hurt, the force said. No arrests have yet been made, as detectives are following ‘several lines of enquiry to understand the circumstances’.

One man, who lives locally, said: “I looked out about 3pm and saw all the police. It was just coming up to school time. It was all taped off and you couldn’t get through.

“There were about nine police cars at first. I had no idea what had happened at that stage. But I’ve spoken to a neighbour who said they heard three of four gunshots, and that they definitely weren’t fireworks. The police are still here and are searching the area.”

One neighbour was returning home from work when he saw the road was completely cordoned off by police.

“I’ve no idea what happened, they didn’t say. It was all blocked off. The entire road was just shut off by the tape,” he said.

Another neighbour said they were completely unaware of what happened until they saw blue lights outside their window.

Detectives are urgently appealing for anyone with information to get in touch.

“Please know that any information we receive will be handled with the utmost sensitivity and discretion, and if you would prefer to remain anonymous, information can be shared by calling Crimestoppers.”
