Why I love this popular, sprawling ‘destination’ store on Anglesey – David Powell

It’s a destination in itself. The James Pringle Weavers shop in Llanfairpwll on Anglesey is a welcome sanctuary with its sprawling interior, gargantuan range of products and spacious cafe – especially on a chilly, January day.

I called in on Friday for a mooch around. Jacket potatoes and ham, egg and chips were advertised on a board outside but I was already hooked from previous visits.

Admittedly, the Country Rose jumpers and Jacques Vert shoes may not be at the cutting edge of fashion but everything about Pringle’s oozes comfort and familiarity. Its owners know what their customers want. This is why coach parties continue to make daily pilgrimages. So as I ambled among the stands and displays it dawned on me how lovely it all was, if somewhat twee. From the small loaves of bara brith to the Welsh Dragon shortbread and Purple Moose beer, it was all very edible, drinkable and, well, comfortable.

In fact, I couldn’t resist buying a box of clotted cream fudge with the world famous name of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch unfeasibly squeezed onto the packaging.

Heading over to the right hand side of this hangar-like shop I found a host of ornaments and knick knacks on comfortable and familiar themes. There were ceramic Beatrix Potter figures: Waddle forward Jemima Puddle-Duck, for instance.

A miniature model of her (made in China) costs £19.95. There was also a booklet on the life and times of Mrs Tiggy-Winkle, the hedgehog washerwoman with kind and twinkly eyes.

Further along were crafts, made by Ruslyn Wood Creations, featuring Superman, Batman, Spiderman and Woody from Toy Story. Elsewhere, I noticed Kendal mint cake and Llanfairpwll tea towels – both no doubt aimed at the tourists or the sentimental.

The familiar themes continued to the exit where there was a fine selection of Christmas tree baubles by the door for customers wanting to prepare early for this year’s festivities.

But I liked the fridge magnets best of all with sheep featuring prominently. On one magnet a ewe has a fleece made up of balls of coloured wool and a stern expression.

The caption read: “I’m yarned and dangerous!” she bleated. Even the jokes are cosy here.
