The £120m plan set to give massive boost to 60-year-old airport

A 60-year-old airport is all set for a massive boost as authorities plan to inject millions into its development. Officials at East Midlands Airport (EMA) are working on a series of “significant” improvements to be implemented in 2025.

The Leicestershire facility turns 60 this year and is in the process of undergoing a major £120 million improvements programme, reports LeicestershireLive.

The initial phase of the project was completed last year, with leaders at the Castle Donington facility announcing that additional work will continue throughout the airport’s diamond anniversary celebrations.

So far, EMA said a new bar, toilets and baby changing facilities have been added, along with a larger JD Sports shop and new seats in the departure lounge.

The airport has introduced new baggage trolleys, an ‘airside’ multi-faith room, and upgraded air traffic control and airfield equipment.

As part of a five-year investment programme, the runways have been resurfaced, energy-efficient LED lights installed, and the security hall expanded to accommodate advanced scanning equipment.

Work on the security hall is ongoing and is anticipated to be completed by summer. The new scanning technology allows passengers to keep electronic devices and 100ml liquids inside their cabin baggage.

Two additional sets of toilets in the departure lounge will be upgraded to match the standards of others at the airport, including the addition of dedicated baby changing and feeding facilities.

The “rapid drop-off area” is being redesigned to improve traffic flow, provide wider pavements, and create clearer pedestrian crossing areas, according to EMA.

New customer information kiosks have been installed in the departure lounge, and a dedicated lost property hub is set to open by next summer.

Additionally, new electric vehicle charging points have been installed across the site, and EMA has introduced the UK’s first fully electric ambulift vehicle to assist passengers with mobility challenges in boarding and disembarking aircraft.

EMA’s managing director Steve Griffiths said: “We’re looking forward to marking 60 years of airport operations in 2025, and it’s fantastic that so much is underway that will bring significant improvements for our customers in our diamond anniversary year.

“Building on some great improvements that came into effect last year, our investments this year will make big changes to help us meet the expectations of today’s travellers and continue to give them the top quality service and effortless experience they deserve.”
