Major update on Llandudno Pier repairs after battering during Storm Darragh

A major update on efforts to fully reopen Llandudno Pier and ongoing repairs, has been released. The historic structure was damaged during Storm Darragh, with efforts underway to fully reopen it to the public.

Earlier this month, North Wales Live reported how damage had been caused under the deck, with carnage on top. Kiosks were badly impacted with roofs ripped apart and one knocked over by the wind.

For weeks the structure remained closed beyond The Grand. This was partly extended, earlier this month, but more bad weather warnings saw the areas open to the public reduced again.

Now another update has been released, published on the Llandudno Pier Facebook page, providing details of where the repairs are up to. It said:

  • Scaffolding has been erected round the gents toilet block to replace the roof.
  • The footing for the Kelly’s unit that was blown away has now been cleared and made safe.
  • The roof to the Bar is currently being repaired as several sections were blown off.
  • Major works continue on the Happy Valley entrance as this is required if we need to remove the Hut that is still on it’s side.
  • The second hut that was hit will require surveying once it is made safe.
  • Repairs will then be started on the steel work under the Cafe, Bar and Deck Arcade as these were the areas that were significantly damaged during the storm. There are currently 10-12 pieces that require replacing/reattaching.
  • All the festoon lighting and “Globes” along the straight will require repairing / replacing.
  • Several benches and tables have been badly damaged and these are in the process of being repaired.

“The weather hasn’t helped in any way with the progress of the repairs and we have faced several hurdles so far as a result. We are looking at opening up the Pier as far as the The Crystal Hut by next weekend. The shops will remain closed until the 1st February and then hopefully back fully trading for the upcoming season.

“We are trying our hardest to get the Pier back open fully as quickly, but as safely, as possible. On behalf of the whole team, I would like to thank everyone for all their continued support, it’s greatly appreciated. I look forward to to welcoming everyone back in the coming weeks.”
