A nurse is fighting for her life after being stabbed by a man in a treatment bay in A&E at Royal Oldham Hospital.
Greater Manchester Police said a man has been detained on suspicion of attempted murder following the serious assault on a woman, at Royal Oldham Hospital’s A&E department. The incident happened at about 11.30pm on Saturday night, with Greater Manchester Police responding to reports of a stabbing at the site on Rochdale Road, Oldham.
It is understood that a member of the public attacked a hospital staff member with a sharp object, not a knife. The victim, a woman in her 50s, sustained severe injuries and remains in hospital for treatment, with her injuries expected to be life-altering.
A 37-year-old man was apprehended at the scene and is currently in police custody. GMP have stated they are not seeking anyone else in relation to the incident and do not believe there is any wider threat to the public.
Detective Sergeant Craig Roters, from the Oldham district, said: “This is a serious incident which has left a woman in a critical condition. Our thoughts are with her family and colleagues, and we will continue to support them throughout this investigation.”
