London is to be freed from the biting cold. BBC Weather forecasters predict thermostats could reach as high as 9C at points this coming week (Monday, January 13 to Sunday, January 19) , a welcome break from the chill we’ve felt this weekend.
The current cold snap has left The Met Office claiming it has felt as low as -3C over the last few days, while the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) extended its amber weather warning until Tuesday morning (January 14). The health body added we need to remain vigilant and keep an eye on the vulnerable, such as the elderly.
Dr Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at UKHSA, said: “We are extending the duration of our Cold-Health Alert, since the Met Office are forecasting that the low temperatures we are seeing will continue further into this week, with snow and icy conditions likely to persist. This weather can have a serious impact on the health of some people, including those aged 65 and over and those with pre-existing health conditions, and it is therefore vital that we continue to check in on friends, family and neighbours that are most vulnerable.

“These people could be more at risk of heart attacks, stroke and chest infections as a result of cold temperatures.” The London Fire Brigade also saw an increase in dogs finding themselves trapped on frozen lakes, meriting a public warning to not go after our beloved canines.
It read: “We’ve attended several incidents today where dogs have been trapped on frozen ponds & lakes.
“Please keep dogs on leads – if your dog ends up on ice, don’t put yourself in danger by going to rescue them yourself. Call 999 and stay off the ice.”
