Stagecoach bus fares to rise in January as national single journey fare cap takes effect

The price of a single journey on Stagecoach buses across the region will rise in January. Fares on bus services will rise as the new single journey bus fare caps come into fruition on January 1.

Despite the new cap on single journeys having risen to £3 nationally, FirstBus had previously announced that single journeys would cost £2.40 in Bristol (excluding journeys longer than six miles). Stagecoach have announced the new prices of journeys across the West of England Combined Authority’s area.

In Bristol and Bath, journeys will be capped at £2.40 for an adult single ticket. However for passengers taking longer journeys, including those in South Gloucestershire, the journey will be capped at £3.

The cost of other tickets including daily tickets and five-day tickets vary depending on your area. Buying on Stagecoach’s app will slightly reduce the price of tickets.

In Bristol and South Gloucestershire, flexible five-day tickets will cost £24 for adults and £20 for under 19s, but can only be bought on the app. Seven day tickets for adults will cost £23 when bought on the bus or £22 on the app, whilst for under 19s it will cost £19.50 on the bus and £18.50 on the app. Night tickets will cost £3.10.

Day tickets will cost £6.20 for adults or £5.20 for under 19s, and £12.40 for a group ticket (for up to five people), when purchased on the bus. When purchased on the app, an adult day ticket will cost £6, under 19s £5 and a group ticket will cost £12.

Single journeys which are short across North Somerset will cost £2. However, those travelling town to town on longer journeys will pay the £3 cap.

What are FirstBus doing?

FirstBus had already announced that single journeys across the region will cost £2.40 rather than the £3 cap. A day ticket in Bristol and Bath would cost £6.50 for adults.

However, discounted two-journey tickets will be scrapped once the new cap takes effect. According to the Tap On, Tap Off section of FirstBus’ website, two journeys will cost £4.80 rather than a discounted amount.

Announcing the change earlier this month, Rob Pymm, Commercial Director for First Bus in the West of England, said: “Some of our fares will be changing from January 1 in response to the UK government’s £3 fare cap. While we had the option of increasing some fares by a larger amount, we’ve worked closely with local transport authorities to keep fares for most passengers 20% lower than the government’s cap.

“Despite growing costs and increasing our network of services, we’ve worked hard to minimise the impact of this fare change, and demonstrate our ongoing commitment to encouraging more people to travel sustainably by bus. Bus travel remains a great value option that is good for society and the environment. We’re continuing to invest in bus services, and our Tap On, Tap Off technology remains the easiest and quickest way to pay, ensuring customers get the best value fare for their journey.”
