‘I swapped flat in UK city for cheaper all-inclusive hotel in Turkey’

A 24-year-old man from Manchester swapped his flat for an all-inclusive hotel in Turkey and was surprised to know that calling home the lavish accommodation in the stunning country was cheaper than living in his English home.

Josh Kerr went viral on TikTok in February when he realised that it would cost him less to live in a resort for a month than his city-centre flat.

He discovered it would cost just £938 to book an all-inclusive resort in Turkey for 28 nights, including flights. After bosses at On the Beach spotted the viral clip, they challenged him to go ahead and fly out to Turkey.

For 28 days, he called the Port River Hotel and Spa in Antalya home, where he basked in 20C heat, enjoyed swims in the pool during his lunch break and took trips to the beach. He told MailOnline that was a “premium way of living, for such a cheap cost.”

In the video, he said: “I’ve just found out it’s cheaper to live at a 5-star all-inclusive resort than it is to live in Manchester. So I’ve gone on On The Beach and I’ve searched from Manchester, April 1 because why not, 28 nights, one adult.

“Search all-inclusive, set it from ‘low price’ first, and look at that – are you kidding? Five-star hotel as well. Hold luggage included, so they’re not going to include a stupid price on getting the hold luggage included. 20kg and fast-track security, what more could you want?”

“And I’m here living in rainy Manchester,” he said in the video, showing his camera out the window. “Look at this geezer, he’s got his umbrella out. I won’t need that in Turkey when I’m at a 5-star resort.”

On the Beach crunched the numbers to reveal where people from the UK could trade their rental bills for a dream getaway.

By analysing rental prices across the 50 most populated cities in the UK and comparing them with over 31,000 holiday packages, analysts have revealed the top destinations where a 28-night stay could cost less than renting for the same period – along with the UK cities that could be getting more bang for their buck.

Turkey was top of the list with stats showing that a 28-night stay is 15% cheaper on accommodation expenses for a month.

With 460 holiday packages on offer for less than 28 days rent, the average couple can stay in Turkey for £892.16 per month – which is £166.44 cheaper than the average UK rent.

In second place was Malta with month-long packages found to be roughly 14% cheaper – that’s about £152 cheaper than UK rent.

With 111 holidays for less than a months’ rent, there are plenty of options for destinations on the islands.
