Workers have been told not to mention religion unless it is relevant to the information being communicated.
A 13-page language guide instead tells them to speak about a person’s “first name, given name or forename”.
Town hall chiefs in Sutton, South London, also warn staff not to call under-30s “youngsters” or over-65s “pensioners” as the terms are “ageist”.
Words such as “vibrant” and “mature” are also not advised.
The guide was put together by diversity experts who said: “Using incorrect or outdated language can perpetuate, contribute to, or cause bias, prejudice and discrimination.”
However, Free Speech Union founder Toby Young said: “This is woke hyper-sensitivity taken to ridiculous lengths.
“I’ve never met a Jew, a Muslim or an atheist offended by the words ‘Christian name’.”
Sutton Council was approached for comment.
