BBC Breakfast’s Nina Warhurst’s life off-screen from forgotten soap role to hard pregnancy

Millions wake up to the latest news with the BBC Breakfast team, including Nina Warhurst, who became a regular fixture in 2020 after appearing since 2018.

Upon her official induction into the show, Nina expressed her enthusiasm: “It’s a programme I have always loved, both as a viewer and as a journalist. I grew up locally, so it makes me especially proud that Breakfast is made and broadcast from Salford. This is an incredibly challenging period for our audiences and I look forward to delivering news on our economy in a way that is clear and inclusive.”

With four years under her belt as an official presenter, we delve into Nina Warhurst’s life beyond BBC Breakfast.

Forgotten soap role

While viewers are accustomed to seeing her on the famous red sofa, Nina once pursued a different path.

Back in 1997, she featured in the Christmas special of Casualty. In 2020, celebrating the broadcaster’s centenary, Nina reminisced by posting a throwback photo from her acting stint to Twitter.

Nina reflected nostalgically on her acting debut, posting: “Howling at finding my first appearance with Auntie Casualty…a spiky teen in polyester, keeping boys a secret, causing parents endless headaches (v method for me in 1997 luvvies ) Here’s to the next chapter. Proud to be part of it.”

Although acting in Casualty was a memorable milestone, Nina’s talents were also showcased in other shows such as Heartbeat and Butterfly Collectors.

Tragic loss

Nina shared an image alongside her mum and sisters while paying tribute to those she lost

In a heartfelt tribute shared on social media two years ago, Nina paid her respects to three beloved individuals in her life who died within months of each other, reports Express.

With a throwback photo featuring her pregnant self with her mother and sisters, she expressed her sorrow, commenting: “They loved us since we were kids – guided us, made us laugh, helped us feel safe. It’s been bruising having a run of grief, but made me appreciative of the support you get from the special elders of your extended village – whatever that is and whoever they are.”

Further in her homage, Nina discussed celebrating the lives of those who had passed on: “We’ve also celebrated! It’s made me realise that lots of the tears are because the right farewells are full of gratitude and are something beautiful.”

Hard pregnancy

Nina had her third child in 2023 with her husband Ted

Nina has found personal happiness as well, marrying Ted Fraser in a lovely ceremony at City Hall in New York back in 2014. They later welcomed their first child, Digby, followed by their second son, Michael born in 2018.

More recently, the duo welcomed their daughter Nancy in 2023, and Nina has been quite open about the challenges surrounding her birth.

On Instagram, she shared an honest update four weeks postpartum, revealing: “it’s been *haaaard* tho! A harder pregnancy. A tougher delivery and a longer recovery… maybe it’s being older… but also I’d somehow forgotten.”

As she navigated the post-birth period, Nina discussed her anxiety about labour not going as planned alongside the various postpartum issues she was dealing with.

In her post, she also reflected on learning to recognise her boundaries now that she’s older: “Part of getting older is getting better aquatinted with your limits and letting go. I’m better at stopping and saying no to visitors and yes to a messy house and yes to asking for help. (A turning point was full snot crying down the phone to the GP – resulting in a glorious prescription of kind words, antibiotics, painkillers and a follow up call about how I was coping).”

Dementia diagnosis

Nina has spoken about her dad’s dementia diagnosis in the past

Last year, Nina confronted another personal issue as her father Chris received a dementia diagnosis. The BBC presenter has previously spoken out about her guilt over becoming frustrated with his forgetfulness.

While working on a BBC feature with her father to highlight the effects of dementia on families, she admitted she sometimes had to tell white lies to him when he was unaware anything was amiss.

She recounted: “He would phone me 10 times a day, saying ‘I need you to come round’ and then I’d get there and he would say, ‘What are you doing here?’ At that point, it is hard not to be cross and that was the surprising thing, I felt really guilty because I was getting angry with him.

“I was taking it out on him and I had two tiny kids at home that I wasn’t seeing as much and I wasn’t focused at work, there are these ripples that then go through your family as well.”

Nina opened up in an emotional Instagram post some years ago about her crushing experience when her father didn’t recognise her during a visit at his care facility.

However, things took a tender turn after she had her baby girl. The BBC presenter delighted her social media fans with a touching video of her father spending time with his granddaughter, where the two were happily engaging in conversation.

BBC Breakfast continues weekdays on BBC One from 6am.
