BBC Breakfast presenter replaced at the last minute as co-star steps in

The BBC Breakfast team mixed things up on Monday when Jon Kay, who typically hosts the show from Monday to Wednesday along with Sally Nugent, was noticeably absent.

Instead, viewers were greeted by Sally and Roger Johnson. While Roger regularly steps in over weekends should Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty be unavailable, his unexpected Monday appearance prompted some confusion among fans.

Audiences at home also enjoyed contributions from John Watson, who provided the latest sports updates, and Carol Kirkwood, who brought the weather forecast.

As social media buzzed with inquiries about why Roger was presenting instead of Jon, one user commented: “Damn! I thought it was Sunday for a minute..What’s Roger Local doing on Breakfast this morning?”

To this, another quipped in jest: “I’d rather have Roger than dad joke Jon,” reports the Express.

While neither Jon nor Roger has publicly discussed the sudden change, Roger took the time to interact with viewers online.

Reacting to a funny moment during the show, one viewer expressed on social media platform X: “@RogerJ_01, your comment about the guy on the tube ‘just showing off’ tickled me summat rotten on a cold dark Monday morning @BBCBreakfast.”

Ever engaging, Roger responded: “I was going to say something about him wearing socks – but thought that might be a bit too much! Have a good Monday.”

Another fan chimed in on the exchange, mentioning: “@sallynugent’s reaction was priceless. ‘Did he just say that?”

Jon made headlines last week after he recounted an “awkward” moment during his stint on Celebrity Mastermind.

He was pitted against Beattie Edmonson, the daughter of Adrian Edmonson, who featured in Jon’s chosen specialist subject, the iconic 1980s sitcom The Young Ones.

As Jon geared up to field questions on the seminal comedy series starring Adrian, Beattie was all set, having selected US rock band The Strokes as her specialism.

During his general knowledge round, Jon revealed to host Clive Myrie that his pick of The Young Ones was inspired by a previous encounter with Adrian Edmondson on Breakfast.

He explained: “Little did I know you put me next to Young Ones royalty here tonight with Beattie here. I was actually interviewing her dad, Ade, oh, on Breakfast. That made me think about doing The Young Ones as my subject.”

BBC Breakfast airs daily at 6am on BBC One.
