The talented Mark Williams, who stars as the beloved Father Brown, has recounted a humorous on-set blunder during filming for series 12.
In a recent discussion about the latest series, which hit the screens on BBC One last week, the veteran actor talked about feeling something was amiss in his role on the well-received period detective show.
Authenticity is key in the fictional village of Kembleford, set against the picturesque Cotswolds in the early 1950s. This means precise attention to the surroundings, outfits, and vintage automobiles as Father Brown unpicks mysteries and solves cunning crimes.
Williams, evidently thrilled by the classic cars that are a part of the programme’s scenery, remarked on the closeness of the filming locales to Birmingham and Coventry, which are steeped in the history of Britain’s automotive industry. He highlighted “the amazing pieces of machinery we get” as one of the prime perks of working on the production.

But, despite his ardour for nostalgic motors, his character sticks to pedal power, navigating the scenes on his iconic bicycle, reports the Mirror. This devotion to two wheels led to an unfortunate incident on the set, which Williams relayed during a chat with the BBC.
Recalling the mishap, he said: “Driving on gravel is my main problem, and a lot of the big houses we film at have gravel drives. I once had to cycle in pursuit of a baddie and hit some deep gravel.”
“We shot the scene in front of a hotel and I ended up coming to an ungraceful stop. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get off in time so I fell off sideways.”

He continued: “A young lad in the hotel kitchen saw me keel over and collapsed in laughter. I was very happy to give that lad the best laugh of his week.”
