The warning is in place from New Year’s Eve right through to New Year’s Day
Heavy rain in Liverpool city centre today
The Met Office has issued a weather warning for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. A yellow weather warning is in place for rain on Tuesday, December 31.
It is in place from 6pm today until 6pm on Wednesday, January 1. Forecasters said heavy rain is likely to lead to disruption across northwest England, with a chance of some locations experiencing flooding.
In Merseyside, the majority of the region is covered by the warning with the exception of coastal areas such as Hoylake, Formby and Southport. The Met Office said people can expect a slight chance of power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses, a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings, spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures and public transport likely to be affected with journey times taking longer.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Steve Willington, explained: “A series of low-pressure systems will track across the UK over the next couple of days bringing some potentially disruptive weather. Almost the entire UK is covered by at least one weather warning during the coming week, demonstrating that it is a complicated weather forecast at the moment.
“Although we know today and tomorrow will see heavy rain and strong winds in parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England, plus some snow in parts of Scotland, it’s Wednesday’s weather where there is less confidence.”
Mr Willington added: “Heavy rain will develop through Monday night and Tuesday morning and is likely to cause some property flooding and travel disruption in the Amber warning area. People in Scotland should check their flood risk on the SEPA website.
“Heavy rain is expected across the whole of Scotland on Tuesday, and a separate band of rain will also push across Northern Ireland, England and Wales by the evening. Strong winds will also be a feature across Northern Ireland, southern Scotland and northeast England, which may lead to some travel disruption on New Year’s Eve.”
