Sunny city break destination with 340 days of sunshine a year and £15 flights from UK

January 2025 has certainly been a month of weather extremes, with everything from heavy rainfall at the start of the New Year to icy cold temperatures this week.

These frosty and snowy conditions might have you yearning for a warm and sunny getaway, a place where you can trade in your thermals for shorts and sunglasses.

Fortunately, there are numerous winter sun destinations to choose from – and the best part is, you don’t even need to endure a long-haul flight.

The vibrant city of Marrakesh in Morocco is an ideal escape from the harsh winter, and its only a few hours from the UK. With up to 340 days of sunshine annually, you’re likely to enjoy plenty of sun during your visit.

Despite being cooler in the winter months, this North-African destination still boasts January temperatures reaching the mid-20s, which is even warmer than our summers, reports the Manchester Evening News.

In fact, it’s the perfect climate for exploring the incredible city, as it’s far more comfortable than the scorching heat of July and August when temperatures can rise into the late 30s.

Skyscanner currently lists available tickets from Bristol Airport to Marrakesh later this month with prices from £20 one-way. However, flying from Stansted is even cheaper at just £15.

Morocco is quickly becoming a favourite among Brits seeking winter sun, offering a unique experience compared to other popular destinations like the Canary Islands. Its rapid growth in popularity has even led some to label it ‘the new Turkey’.

While the country boasts glorious sunshine, it also offers much more. Visitors can marvel at the beautiful Moorish architecture, explore hidden gardens, and immerse themselves in the bustling activity of the souks.

The Medina quarter, the ancient fortified city centre, houses Morocco’s largest traditional market. Recognised as a UNESCO world heritage site, this vibrant market is teeming with stalls selling everything from aromatic spices to handmade goods.

Scattered throughout the city are breathtaking gardens, including the famous Jardin Majorelle. This picturesque botanical garden was created by painter Jacques Majorelle, with construction starting in the 1920s.

It features a vibrant cubist villa designed by French architect Paul Sinoir.

For those interested in history, the 19th-century Bahia Palace is a must-see. Known for its stunning decorations, the palace’s walls are adorned with intricate stuccos, paintings, and mosaics.

Inside, visitors can explore gardens, courtyards, and rooms all showcasing traditional Moroccan architecture.
