Plans have been submitted to Bridgend County Borough Council to tear down one of the area’s most well-known and historic pubs. The application could see the former Cornelly Arms pub based in the village of North Cornelly demolished by developers at Elite Design Ltd, if approved in the coming months, in order to re-purpose the site for “further development”.
The building is believed to have been first constructed as far back as the 1600s and is understood to have closed in 2014. It has since fallen in to a state of disrepair with the roof, floors, and walls all said to be in a dangerous condition.
The site is located on the main road of the small Bridgend village near the residential properties of School Terrace and around 300m from Corneli Primary School. The report reads: “Research suggests that the building used as the public house was originally constructed around 1650 and has design and construction features which are typical of a building of this age.”
It added: “The building has been unoccupied for a period of time and is showing significant signs of disrepair. The client has subsequently made the decision to demolish the building with a view to re-purposing the site for further development. As a result Cox Demolition and Groundworks have been appointed to undertake the demolition work on their behalf.”
If approved by the authority plans say the work to demolish and clear the site will take place over five phases, though there is no indication as to how the site could be used moving forward. For the latest Bridgend news, sign up to our newsletter here
