‘I got a £35 anti-ageing retinol oil for under £9 with this new beauty box’

Often referred to as ‘the gold standard in anti-ageing skincare’, vitamin A derivatives such as retinol, retinal and retinyl palmitate are proven to be effective at tackling signs of ageing such as fine lines, pigmentation and dullness – but products containing these potent ingredients can be pricey. Luckily I’ve found a way for you to try out vitamin A-based product that usually costs £35 for less than a tenner.

OK! Beauty Box’s latest monthly subscription box, called the Dream Night In Edit, has just dropped, and I’ve had a first look at it. Inside you’ll get five skincare and body products designed to create the perfect calming evening routine, including the aforementioned £35 anti-ageing face oil, luxurious muscle-easing gel and three different face masks.

Altogether the box costs £8.99 if you’re a new subscriber to OK! Beauty Box, or £15 if you’ve already got a subscription, but the contents are worth over £90 – so you’re paying a fraction of the value of even just one of the products inside.

Here’s exactly what’s inside and why I think it’s worth signing up…

  • Disciple Dreamy Skin Retinyl Night Oil – 20ml full-size, RRP £35
  • Amphora Aromatics Mint and Dead Sea Salts Deep Cleansing Face Mask – 100ml full-size, RRP £14.40
  • Aromatherapy Associates De-Stress Muscle Gel – 40ml travel-size, RRP £10
  • Flânerie Glow-Reviving Sheet Mask – one sheet, RRP £22
  • Bubble T Cosmetics Hydrogel Lip Patches in a lucky dip of either Aloe Vera & Green Tea, Vitamin E & Green Tea, or Hyaluronic Acid & Green Tea – one mask, RRP £2.50
  • A voucher to redeem for two copies of OK! Magazine – RRP £8.40

The most expensive product in the box is the Disciple Dreamy Skin Retinyl Oil – which costs £35 on retailers such as Lookfantastic –and if you’ve always wanted to try a skincare product containing vitamin A, this is a great option. Retinyl palmitate is less potent than other forms such as retinol and retinal, meaning there’s much less chance of irritation. It’s also a lovely lightweight oil formula that nourished dry skin but soaks in quickly and doesn’t feel greasy.

And the other four products in the box are all lovely treats, too. Aromatherapy Associates is one of my favourite bath, body and wellness brands, so I was thrilled to see this body gel inside (it smells incredible). I always have sheet masks in my bathroom for before an event or whenever my skin needs a boost of hydration, and I’m looking forward to layering it with the Bubble lip mask. Clay masks are another skincare cupboard staple for me for if my skin’s looking congested (my boyfriend uses them too), so I know this Amphora Aromatics one will be put to good use.

The one minor downside is that two of the five products are single-use, so it’s a bit more of a one-time mega pamper package than something that’s going to keep you stocked up for months – but still great value for under £9.

If you don’t think the products inside are right for you, I think this particular edit makes a great gift for someone else, as they’re all little pampering treats.

Beauty box subscription services in general are a great way to try new products for significantly less than their RRP. If you’re a beauty fan then they’re also, I think, a lovely treat to receive in the post each month. OK! Beauty Box is also very flexible, allowing you to skip or cancel your monthly subscription at any time.

Other popular beauty box subscriptions include Glossybox’s, from £12.50 a month, and Lookfantastic’s The Box, from £13 a month. Cult Beauty also regularly sells one-off beauty boxes that will save you money, including this Glow And Go Goody Bag, now down to £54 but worth over £275 in total.
