Seals have been spotted in public places in a Yorkshire seaside town to rest up – to the joy of onlookers with the arrival of yet another ‘beautiful creature’ in the past 24 hours.
It comes after last week a seal, affectionately named Bernie, rested up on near the beach in Scarborough, taking refuge on a lifeboat ramp. Since then, an adult female Grey seal has also landed on the beach for a little respite.
Medics from British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) and Active Security Solutions have drawn out a large cordon to stop onlookers from approaching the mammal and allow her to sleep. The rescue team noted the seal seemed younger and a more suitable weight for the winter months.
BDMLR said on social media: “Seals will rest out of water, called hauling out, for long periods of time to sleep, relax, and digest food. They don’t need to be in water, and can pack a serious bite if disturbed. It is vital seals aren’t approached by children, dogs, drones, or curious people wanting to get selfies as the stress inflicted can have long-lasting consequences on that mammal.

“Medics have spoken with large numbers of public who have stopped by to see the seal, and many have asked fantastic questions. So far, not one loose dog has bothered her and she has been able to rest.”
Lee Peace commented: “On behalf of Active Security Solutions we would like to genuinely say it has been an absolute pleasure to assist you guys in the safe return of which we have now named her (Grace of the sea).
“My hat goes off to you and your team and your swift response to our call for help. Myself and DD never in a million years thought we would be so close to such a beautiful creature and this is one of those stories that would definitely go down in history for us. Once again, I’d like to thank you and your team.”
