Robson Green left ‘devastated’ as bosses give brutal one-word label after medical

Robson Green has confessed to feeling “devastated” when given a brutal one-word description by TV bosses at the start of a recent project.

The actor, who first graced our screens as hospital porter Jimmy Powell in Casualty back in 1989, has since enjoyed a successful career spanning three decades, featuring in popular shows such as ITV’s Wire in Blood, Soldier Soldier and Grantchester, as well as presenting fishing documentaries.

Despite turning 60 last month, Robson chose not to celebrate, preferring to make “every day special”. He revealed that in his younger years, he would look at people in their 60s and question “how are you still alive”.

In an interview with Woman’s Weekly, Robson shared: “Funnily enough, I had a medical recently for a job I did and the guy referred to me as elderly. I was devastated.”

He added: “That’s what people do when you’re 60. I don’t want their awe, their pity or the label of being older,” reports the Daily Record.

The star didn’t even pop a bottle of champagne to commemorate his milestone birthday, revealing that he “doesn’t drink really”, having decided to reduce his alcohol consumption 15 years ago. Instead of indulging in a “few wines or a champagne” in the evening, he now prefers a glass of sparkling water and “clarity,” which he describes as “great”.

Rather than taking time off to celebrate, Robson is currently busy filming a new drama in Spain alongside The Crown’s Jason Watkins.

When he’s not gracing our screens as an actor, Robson Green pursues his passion for producing documentaries on fishing and exploring the beauty of Northumberland. Robson shares his life in the North East with partner Zoila Short and remains close to Taylor, his 24 year old son from his marriage to Vanya Seager.

The versatile star has also taken on the role of producer for Grantchester, in which he plays DCI Geordie Keating. Now climbing into its ninth season, the show features Keating joining forces with a village vicar to untangle mysteries.

Despite co-star Tom Brittney parting ways with the series, much like James Norton before him, Robson remains excited about continuing to film, sharing that the team has “the most wonderful time” during production. Catch the latest instalment of Grantchester on Wednesdays at 9pm on ITV One and ITVX.
