People saying same person should have been knighted ahead of Khan and Southgate

The New Year Honours List has been released, but not everyone is happy about who has been included and who has been left out.

Among those on the list are Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, former England football manager Gareth Southgate, actor and author Stephen Fry, and Labour MP Emily Thornberry.

Sadiq Khan, who this year won a record third term as London mayor, said he was “truly humbled” to receive the honour.

He said: “I couldn’t have dreamed when growing up on a council estate in south London that I would one day be mayor of London.

“It’s the honour of my life to serve the city I love and I will continue to build the fairer, safer, greener and more prosperous London that all of the capital’s communities deserve.”

But not all are pleased with those who’ve been named, with England rugby coach Kevin Sinfield trending on X (formerly Twitter) yesterday after people started calling for him to be honoured.

Sinfield, a former England rugby player, has spent years raising awareness and money for motor neurone disease in honour of his ex-Leeds teammate Rob Burrow. He has run seven marathons and seven ultramarathons and has raised over £10million.

Sinfield and Burrow, who died this year, were both given CBEs in last years honours for their work to raise awareness for the disease.

An X user said of Southgate: “This boring gimp gets a knighthood for failure whilst Kevin Sinfield doing gruelling challenge after gruelling challenge to raise MILLIONS for MND is only worthy of a CBE. Make it make sense.”

Another agreed: “Kevin Sinfield definitely deserves a knighthood. Sadie Khan definitely DOESN’T deserve a knighthood. I think there should be a petition regarding both.”

One X user said: “Disgusting that Kevin Sinfield has been over looked for knighthood!! What this bloke has done for the MND community and his best mate was unbelievable.

“Can’t believe Gareth Southgate for being a failure and Khan for turning the capital into a cease pit!!”

Also among those receiving honours are Olympian Keely Hodgkinson, actor Carey Mulligan, and four former sub-postmasters Lee Castleton, Jo Hamilton, Christopher Head and Seema Misra.
