New parking rules will impact every driver

Millions of drivers are being alerted to new parking rules being rolled out across the UK. The changes will impact motorists when they use private car parks in a bid to halt ‘unfair’ fines.

Parking firms will be stopped from punishing drivers who don’t pay within five minutes. It comes after one woman was hit with £2,000 in fines for falling foul of the five-minute rule.

Drivers have complained about not having signal while trying to use payment apps or struggling to use them quickly enough to make payments. Private parking operators have been told to review and update their rules to stop the unfair practice.

Richard Evans, motoring spokesperson for webuyanycar, said: “This amendment in the code of conduct is necessary to update parking regulations in line with the development in technology surrounding parking. Over the past few years, there has been a significant move away from pay and display parking machines and towards paid parking apps.

“As motorists get used to this change and learn to use paid parking apps, it is logical that they are given more time to work out how to pay. Whilst parking fines are required to deter motorists from ignoring regulations, there should be more leniency applied to circumstances where genuine drivers are acting with the right intentions.

“Parking can be a stressful experience particularly at busy times in the day, during rush hour or around city centres on weekends. This is a positive step in the right direction to allow motorists to find parking spaces and pay with more ease.”
