Mike Amesbury MP has pleaded guilty to common assault by beating. The Runcorn and Helsby MP was involved in an altercation with a 45-year-old man in Frodsham, Cheshire in the early hours of October 26, 2024.

In November he was charged by Cheshire Police with common assault by beating Paul Fellows and he pleaded guilty at Chester Magistrates Court this morning (January 16). Amesbury was suspended from the Labour Party last year after footage emerged which appeared to show him punching a man and he now sits in parliament as an independent.

Amesbury has represented Runcorn and Helsby, previously Weaver Vale, in parliament since 2017. He was also a shadow minister between 2018 and 2024.

In a statement released last year, Amesbury previously said he would “co-operate with any inquiries”, but was “determined to remain an open and accessible MP for our community.”
