‘Nasty offence’ in Huddersfield leaves woman, 76, with face wound

A woman in her 70s was injured after she was attacked by a would-be mugger in Huddersfield town centre.

The 76-year-old woman was pushed to the ground on Dundas Street near the bus station on Wednesday afternoon. She suffered an injury to her face and needed hospital treatment.

The Kirklees District Crime Team has issued a CCTV still of a man they would like to identify. The attack happened at about 2.30pm on Wednesday January 15.

A man wearing a baseball cap approached the 76-year-old victim from behind and pushed her, causing her to fall and suffer a facial injury.

The man had attempted to steal the woman’s bag but made off empty handed. A number of passers by stopped to assist the woman who was taken to hospital for treatment to facial injuries, and later discharged.

The suspect was described as wearing dark clothing, a baseball cap and as having a dark beard. Detective Sergeant Andy Holmes of the Kirklees District Crime Team, said: “This was a particularly nasty offence in which the suspect has approached a 76-year-of victim and shoved her to the ground, causing her to sustain facial injuries.

“It is fortunate she was not more severely injured and I would appeal to anyone who saw the incident or suspect or who stopped to assist the victim to contact us.

“We have issued a CCTV still of a suspect and, while I appreciate the still does not give a clear view of his face, we think it is important to release it in case anyone saw a man fitting the suspect’s description near the bus station at the time of the assault.”

Anyone who can assist the investigation is asked to contact the Kirklees District Crime Team on 101 referencing police crime number 13250024964.
