Touring caravans site planned for edge of Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Anglesey

A bid to develop a seasonal caravan site as part of a plan to diversify an Anglesey coal and gas business is set to come before island planners. A full application for a touring caravan site with the erection of an amenity building, formation of a new access and associated developments on land at Valley, near Holyhead, has been made to Anglesey County Council.

The proposed site at Bryn Hyfryd Farm would be available for occupation by caravans and camper vans from March until October. The scheme, submitted by Carol Williams, concerns a 70 acre site of “underutilised agricultural land” adjoining Bryn Hyfryd coal depot and yard for Looms Brothers.

As a “seasonal provision” the plans say it is anticipated that the current open grazing land will “revert to grazing use out of season.” The scheme also includes a new vehicular access, created from an existing minor lane, which links Valley and Llanfairyneubwll. The plans also describe provision of a single-storey shower block and facilities and a small office with external low-level lighting and a small bin store.

Anglesey County Council planning documents state: “The scheme would involve the use of the land set to the south/south-east of the site of our clients’ Coal & Gas Merchant business to accommodate a high-quality touring caravan scheme along with the erection of a modest amenity building, construction of an access to serve the same, landscaping, together with associated infrastructure to serve the scheme.

“Our clients’ intention is to diversify their business as part of a medium to long term need to move away from a business model that is dominated by the sale of fossil fuels. Their ambition would be to develop this site which would allow a pivot into a new and more sustainable market (both environmentally and financially) and thus to protect the jobs and economic benefits that their business offers, whilst meeting the responsibilities and challenges of the 21st century.”

The proposed site is located on the eastern edge of the AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) where it abuts the village of Valley and the A55. The plans state: “The presence of tourers in occupied operational periods will be limited to glimpsed views for users of the A55. The design and content of the proposal, will not damage the special qualities and features of the AONB.

“It is not predicted to be prominent or obtrusive in the proposed location and will not impact upon the character of existing buildings, and general beauty of the area, but will seek to strengthen the existing landscape character by providing screening of less attractive landscape elements and providing new hedges and wetland copses which are part of the noted existing landscape fabric.”
