Molly-Mae shares real reason she went on Love Island as family refused to watch

Former Love Island contestant Molly-Mae Hague has confessed why she decided to appear on the reality show in her tell-all Amazon Prime documentary, released today (January 17).

The television personality and social media influence appeared on the ITV2 dating series back in 2019. While appearing on the show, she met and was paired up with boxer Tommy Fury. The couple would eventually finish as runners up to Amber Gill and Greg O’Shea.

While the pair share a child together in daughter Bambi, who was born in 2023, they announced the end of their relationship in August of last year. Now, Molly-Mae is appearing in an Amazon Prime documentary that will show fans more of her life than ever before and how she is moving on from her Love Island origins.

The first three episodes of Molly-Mae: Behind it all are streaming now and In the second episode of the series, she reveals why she went on Love Island in the first place. She also admitted that her family refused to watch her on television when it was originally broadcast.

In a heart warming moment, Molly-Mae’s grandmother asks her about her new business. She explains it is a clothing line to which her nan responds: “Very nice. Sexy clothes. If you happen to have any spare bits, send them my way, please.”

She continued: “I remember Love Island. All that sexy business and I said to Debbie ‘I’m not going to watch Love Island’. She said but Molly’s in it – I don’t care. Then I watch them that night and oh my goodness.” 

Molly then defends herself by claiming: “I didn’t do anything” but her nan retorts: “Well, we didn’t know that.” She then apologises for calling her granddaughter vain when she was younger.

Later, as scenes show Molly-Mae getting ready for one of her first fashion events, she reveals the reasoning behind her decision to go on the show was to further her career. She admits: “I was going on Love Island because I knew the kind of work I was in, it was going to help me. I did go into Love Island as a business move but I did end up finding love.”

Molly-Mae was already sharing sponsored posts and collaborating with brands on Instagram before Love Island but following her successful stint on television, these partnerships grew. They developed into her promoting fashion lines and being named a creative director for a major company, although she only held the title for less than two years.

Molly-Mae: Behind It All episodes 1-3 are streaming on Amazon Prime. The remaining episodes will release in Spring 2025.
