Mystery ‘explosion’ wakes residents up in middle of the night

The quiet of the night was shattered in Flintshire as residents reported hearing a huge “explosion” sparking widespread speculation and concern. On Tuesday morning social media was abuzz with people discussing the bang which was reported to be heard by those in the Flint and Bagillt areas, as well as those further afield in Connah’s Quay and Shotton.

Queries about the nature of the sound filled the online airwaves, with one resident questioning: “Anyone an idea of what can only be described as an explosion was, seemed too loud to be a firework.”

The response from others was unanimous in ruling out fireworks, one noting “I heard it too. Definitely not a firework. Made me jump. To me it sounded like it was down on the coast road but I know sound travels.” For the latest Welsh news delivered to your inbox sign up to our newsletter

Comments continued with one person stating: “I heard it in Cornist at around 1am woke me up very loud and quite scary,” while another said, “So loud here in Bagillt. Not sure what that could have been.”

Some speculated that the noise could have been anything from a thunderclap to a sonic boom. Official sources such as HM Coastguard, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, and North Wales Police had no information to offer at this time, North Wales Live reported.

North Wales Live is reaching out to Flintshire County Council for any possible explanations to resolve this confounding mystery.
