‘I would like to stay’ – Key Crystal Palace midfielder asked about contract future

Will Hughes has admitted he wants to extend his stay with Crystal Palace with his contract coming to an end following the conclusion of the 2024-25 season.

The 29-year-old has been a key player under Oliver Glasner and has featured 18 times in the Premier League this season.

Hughes was due to be out of contract at the end of last season but had his Selhurst Park stay extended for a further 12 months.

“Of course I would like to stay,” Hughes told the South London Press.

“Hopefully, that’s what happens.I’m there for the team when called upon – just like every other player should be.

“We have strong competition for that central midfield area and that helps us play at such a high level. We know that if we’re not quite on it, the next person will come in and do it.

“It’s healthy competition.”

Ismaila Sarr played 47 times with Hughes during their time at Watford.

The duo are now playing together with the Eagles after Sarr signed at Selhurst Park in a £12.5m switch from Marseille in the summer.

Sarr picked up his seventh Premier League goal contribution of the season in Palace’s 2-0 win at Leicester on Wednesday evening.

“He’s really come into his own,” said Hughes.

“I knew this was always going to happen with the quality that he’s got and the humbleness he shows as well. He’s a top player and when he’s on form, he’s unstoppable.

“His pace is frightening. His decision-making and ability on the ball are top as well. When you have the whole package, it’s hard to stop.”

After making their joint-worst start to a Premier League campaign, the Eagles have now only suffered one defeat in their last 10 outings.

“It’s a testament to how we have reacted to such a poor start,” said Hughes.

“There are many reasons for that start, but how we have reacted over the last 10-15 games has been a credit to us and the lads to show what we’re capable of.

“We have to be humble about it.

“We have to keep going – nothing has happened yet. We need to keep going as we are and look up the table from now on.”
