James Martin shares ‘real pride and joy’ from his childhood that is ‘now worth a fortune’

James Martin has opened up about his early life as he revealed his ‘real pride and joy’ and how it is ‘now worth a fortune’.

During an interview with The Times, the celebrity chef was asked whether his interest in the world of cooking began in his early days. But James, who hosts Saturday Morning on ITV, revealed his childhood bedroom looked no different to most teenagers growing up in 1980s England.

James explained he had lots of Ferrari and Lamborghini posters as well as Star Wars and Evel Knievel memorabilia dotted across his bedroom wall as a teenager. However, there is one item that James has kept hold of to to this day.

Despite the decades passing by, James says he has kept his BMX bike safely in his possession. He believe it would be “worth a fortune now”.

And, continuing to look back on his earlier years, the 52-year-old reminisced on growing up in Yorkshire and eventually leaving the area to embark on a career in cooking when he was in his early 20s: “I was back there last weekend. I’m up there in a couple of days. Doesn’t matter where I am in the world I never think of myself as anything other than a proud Yorkshireman.”

Growing up in the small village of Welburn in North Yorkshire, James began his career in cooking when he trained as a chef in France. After working in a number of high-end restaurants, he ventured into the broadcasting world when he was 24 years old, starring in James Martin: Yorkshire’s Finest.

Besides his TV work, James also owns a slew of his restaurants having first opened The Leeds Kitchen in 2011. It is his TV work that made James a household name however.

As well as Saturday Morning on ITV, James has presented on BBC’s Saturday Kitchen and fronted a host of cookery shows including James Martin’s Spanish Adventure. He came fourth on Strictly Come Dancing in 2005.
