BBC Breakfast interrupted as hosts pay tribute after delivering heartbreaking news

BBC Breakfast presenters Ben Thompson and Luxmy Gopal began Saturday’s programme with the sombre announcement of football icon Denis Law’s death.

The beloved former footballer died at 84 after battling Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. Starting the BBC broadcast, Ben remarked: “Tributes have been paid to the former Scotland, Manchester United, and Manchester City footballer, Denis Law, who has died at the age of 84.”

Luxmy continued: “He spent more than a decade at Old Trafford, where he scored 237 goals and remains the only Scottish player to have won the prestigious Ballon d’Or.”

A tribute reflecting on his remarkable career followed on BBC Breakfast, featuring flashback clips highlighting Denis’s time in the football spotlight, reports the Express.

The BBC sports correspondent Andy Swiss recalled how Denis was affectionately known as “the king” by Manchester United supporters, noting: “Denis Law’s arm in the air celebration became one of the most familiar in football.”

The segment included a personal glimpse into Denis’s life, discussing his struggle with the eye condition strabismus which caused him to have squint eyes and how he initially played football partially sighted until corrective surgery.

This significant step in his life marked the start of his sparkling football journey, notably with Manchester City in the 1960s.

As the tribute wrapped up, Luxmy acknowledged the loss felt by fans from both sides of Manchester, marking it as a truly grievous day for the football community.

Following the passing of football icon Denis Law, BBC’s Gavin Ramjaun reflected: “You describe football players these days as legends. But, I think Denis Law, I mean, there’s no more appropriate word really. Absolute legend of the game, completely. Along with Sir Bobby Charlton and George Best for United back in those times, the holy trinity as they were called.”

Denis Law’s family made a heartfelt statement on Friday evening confirming his death: “It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a tough battle, but finally, he is now at peace.”

They further expressed their gratitude towards his supporters: “We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently. We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made the difference.”
